As a Legal Advisor for the BSA you will bring your perspective to a team which considers challenging questions relating to freedom of expression and content standards in a constantly changing media environment. The Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA) is an independent Crown entity which determines complaints about broadcasting standards on television and radio, undertakes research on community attitudes and works with broadcasters to develop and promote broadcasting standards. In making its determinations, the BSA observes the rules of natural justice, acknowledges the principles of partnership, protection and participation inherent in Te Tiriti o Waitangi and considers the needs, aspirations and cultural values of tangata whenua. We are seeking a Legal Advisor with approximately one to two years' PQE to join our small, high functioning team for a fixed term of 12 months to assist us with increased complaints volume and some key projects. You will assist in the investigation of complaints which includes reviewing broadcasts, managing case files, drafting high quality draft decisions, providing advice on legal and BSA precedents, and peer review. Additionally, you will be involved in other aspects of the BSA's work, which may include liaising with broadcasters on their levy obligations and standards requirements, drafting press releases, production of newsletters, creation of web content, contributing to BSA's strategy and accountability documents, taking responsibility for projects within the BSA's key functions including oversight and development of the standards system, and research and drafting of opinions. To be successful in this role you will be: A lawyer with around one to two years post-qualification experience in a relevant area of law and a sound academic record; Confident and capable in articulating your views using sound reasoning, both verbally and in written form; Well organised, with the ability to manage a busy, varied workload; Detail oriented with strong analysis skills; and A great team player with a collaborative working style. We are embarking on a programme to strengthen our links with Māori and Pasifika communities, so it would be advantageous to have experience and/or interest in working with iwi or Pasifika groups.
