The Inner City Legal Centre (ICLC) is looking for students to complete their practical legal training placement with us on a volunteer basis. This is an opportunity for students to experience legal practice and consider professional responsibilities in a vibrant and inclusive community legal setting. The position is unpaid, with a focus on your learning and development. We aim to prepare our students to commence a legal career.
The PLT Program duties include meeting clients, taking instructions, and supporting solicitors to give legal advice. You will also be involved in casework, potentially including court attendance, drafting legal correspondence and following up client matters. You will be doing real legal work under the supervision of the Principal Solicitor.
Our clients come from diverse circumstances and include people who are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, people with disability, clients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, clients with complex issues, and clients who identify as LGBTIQ. It is essential that you be willing and able to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
The application process involves a written application, an interview and negotiation of working hours suitable to both the student and ICLC. Preference is given to applicants committing to a 60+ day placement of at least 3 days per week, usually including one evening per week.
Completion or near-completion of a law degree and eligibility to commence the practical experience components of Practical Legal Training. It may be possible to complete part of a PLT placement before graduation – you need to check with your proposed provider to see how many days you could complete.

We will also seek contact details for two referees before finalising any placement. Applications that do not address the selection criteria will not be considered.
