Job Description

SFO Case Briefing Officer – Auckland

The Serious Fraud Office is a highly specialised government department responsible for the investigation and prosecution of serious or complex financial crime, including bribery and corruption. We take pride in the work we do to keep New Zealand safe from financial crime.

At the SFO, we employ an expert team of accountants, investigators, lawyers, electronic forensic experts, and support people to achieve our mandate.

We seek a law enforcement or criminal law specialist to join our team based in Commercial Bay, Auckland CBD as Case Briefing Officer. This is a permanent employment status role with full-time hours.

As our Case Briefing Officer, you will assist the SFO’s case teams by preparing formal written statements, arranging for the statements to be agreed upon and signed, and preparing witness lists. You will manage relationships with witnesses in preparation for and during criminal trials, ensuring they are well informed and supported throughout the prosecution proceedings.  You will collect, organise, and summarise information, verify transcripts, and assemble documents, reports, and evidence for cases.  At trial, you will assist with logistics and witness coordination, and operate the SFO’s electronic courtroom.

To be successful in this role, you will have considerable experience within the criminal prosecution environment and comprehensive knowledge of its processes, along with a clear understanding of relevant legislation such as the Crimes Act 1961, Evidence Act 2006 and Criminal Procedure Act 2012. You have expertise in preparing formal statements for criminal investigations and prosecutions and have worked extensively with witnesses. You have worked with case management systems and master new technology with ease. Particularly organised, you apply structure to your tasks and have proven effectiveness in executing multiple priorities concurrently and independently. You are known for your thoroughness, dependability, and sound judgement, and retain these attributes when working within time constraints and on matters of significance.

At the SFO we value a ‘growth mindset’ and explore this attribute during our recruitment process and in our development discussions.  We believe possessing a growth mindset is a key contributor to success in the SFO environment.  We are a close knit, motivated team with a strong workplace culture. We recognise that diversity and inclusion is important to our work. We value the unique abilities and perspectives of our employees which allows us to continue to create a supportive environment that meets the needs of our people, our business, and the communities where we work.  We are a flexible by default organisation. When our work allows, we have opportunity to work remotely a couple of days each week, and we have flexible start and finish times. We offer an additional week of annual leave that covers the three usual workdays between Christmas and New Year plus two days to use at our discretion.
