The HIV/AIDS Legal Centre (HALC) is currently looking for 2 volunteer PLT Students to join our team for an immediate start.
About the organisation:
HALC provides free legal services to people affected by, and those most at risk of, HIV and Hep C (HCV) on HIV/HCV related legal matters.
We deal with a range of HIV/Hep C related legal issues including -
Volunteers perform a variety of day-to-day tasks including -
We request volunteers completing PLT requirements to commit to a minimum of 3 days a week, ideally 4 days a week.
Please send in your brief resume and cover letter indicating the number of days and specific days you will be able to work for, to firstname.lastname@example.org
Unfortunately, due to the limited resources of our Centre, only applicants that progress to the next stage will be contacted.
Volunteers may, from time to time be required to see clients face to face and/or attend Tribunals/Courts and as such these positions must be undertaken face to face at our Surry Hills office. Unfortunately, we have very limited capacity for volunteers to work remotely on non client related research tasks.
For your protection and the protection of staff, other volunteers and clients, at this stage, we are only opening applications to those who have received 3 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. This course of action aims to achieve consistency with the messaging from NSW Health as well as the recommendations from our funders.
Those with medical exemptions will be assessed on a case-by-case basis in order to mitigate the risk to themselves and others.
HALC’s vision is to see an end to the HIV/AIDS crisis and does so by providing high quality legal services whilst displaying an appreciation of, and sensitivity to, the special needs of people with an HIV related legal matter; undertaking community legal education; and engaging in law reform activities in areas relating to HIV/AIDS.
To deal with these particular issues, we adopted a different service delivery model to most other community legal centres. Rather than a triage service that provides initial advice and referral, we focus on ongoing casework and routinely run longer and more complex matters in order to achieve genuine, systemic change.
