Australian Taxation Office

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is the principal revenue collection agency of the Australian Government.

Our role is to effectively manage and shape the tax and superannuation systems that support and fund services for Australians, including:

  • collecting revenue
  • administering the goods and services tax (GST) on behalf of the Australian states and territories
  • administering a range of programs that provide transfers and benefits to the community
  • administering the major aspects of Australia’s superannuation system
  • being custodian of the Australian Business Register.

At the ATO, you’ll do work you can’t do anywhere else. Work that is meaningful, diverse and challenging. Work that makes a real difference to the lives of Australians and contributes to their economic and social wellbeing – work that might take you somewhere unexpected.

Our Law Design and Practice Group develops and maintains robust and enduring relationships across the ATO, Government, Treasury, the courts and the tax and legal professions; manages and contributes technical expertise on the end-to-end dispute resolution process; including Independent Review and Strategic Litigation; Leads the ATO’s contribution to the design, direction and simplification of policy and law change; Forms and clearly communicates the ATO view of the law, internally and externally; and Undertakes revenue monitoring and forecasting.
