The NSW Department of Education serves the community by leading the provision of world-class education. The department protects young children by regulating preschool and long day care providers. Once children move into school, we provide them with a world-class primary and secondary education. We also work to advance the wellbeing of Aboriginal people.
The Legal Services Directorate comprises the Legal Services Unit and Information Access Unit. Legal Services represents the Department of Education in courts and tribunals. It also gives legal support and advice to schools and regional and state offices. This advice ranges from prevention of legal liability and legal risk reduction, to privacy, contracts and compliance with legislation. It is also available to provide legal advice in respect of any departmental policies or procedures that have a legal complexion. Information Access is responsible for the Department's obligations under the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009. The Unit processes, decides and co-ordinates all personal and non-personal information access applications received by the entire Department.
