Inner City Legal Centre (ICLC) is looking for students to complete their practical legal training placement with us. This is a great opportunity for students to experience legal practice and consider professional responsibilities in a community setting, at a community legal centre with both generalist and specialist practices. If you do your PLT with us, we aim to prepare you for the commencement of your legal career. This position is voluntary and unpaid. The PLT Program duties include performing client intake, taking instructions, assisting in giving legal advice, casework, assistance with court attendance, legal drafting and following up client matters. The Program is only offered to suitable applicants subject to an application process, an interview and availability, and preference is given to applicants committing to a 60+ day placement with progression of 3 days per week, usually including one evening per week. PLT Students are indemnified as volunteer workers under the ICLC Professional Indemnity Insurance policy. Students are responsible for ensuring they comply with all conditions and requirements of their PLT provider in progressing towards admission. PLT students perform work under supervision, and the PLT Placement overall is supervised by the Principal Solicitor. Selection criteria: Prerequisite –
Completion of a law degree and eligibility to commence the practical experience components of Practical Legal Training.
Essential criteria –
Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to social justice.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds and in diverse circumstances, in particular clients experiencing significant stress who may present with challenging behaviours (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, clients with disabilities, clients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, clients with complex issues, clients who identify as LGBTIQ, etc).
Understanding of legal professional practice issues, including duties to maintain confidentiality and to avoid conflicts of interest.
Ability to work independently and as part of a small team.
Demonstrated interest in legal issues affecting communities served by ICLC.
Desirable criteria –
Prior experience volunteering with the ICLC or another community legal centre or law-related NGO.
Demonstrated experience in administration or customer service.
Intention to commence the coursework component of PLT by or soon after the commencement date of any PLT placement.
