With offices in Perth, Pinjarra, Broome, Carnarvon, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Port Hedland and Kununurra, Aboriginal Family Legal Services (AFLS) provides culturally safe legal and advocacy services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities across Western Australia.

We understand that legal issues often intersect with personal, family and community challenges. Our team provides legal advice, representation, advocacy and social support to help clients navigate complex systems and achieve safer, stronger outcomes for themselves and their families.

Family Law

The family law system helps people resolve legal issues relating to family relationships, particularly when relationships break down and children are involved. AFLS provides culturally safe legal advice, support and representation while focusing on the best interests of children and helping families reach practical arrangements wherever possible.

Family Violence Restraining Orders (FVROs)

Child Protection

Criminal Injury Compensation (CIC)

Victims of crime may be entitled to compensation for injuries and losses resulting from criminal offences. Criminal Injury Compensation can help cover medical expenses, loss of income, and the pain and suffering experienced following a crime.

Our Criminal Injury Compensation services include:

Sexual Assault Legal Service WA (SALSWA)

AFLS has partnered with Women's Legal Service WA (WLSWA) and Ruah Legal Services (RLS) to deliver state-wide legal services for victims and survivors of sexual violence in Western Australia.

Through this partnership, clients can access culturally safe legal support, information and advocacy to help them understand their rights and navigate available legal options.

Social Support and Family Advocacy

At AFLS, we recognise that legal issues do not occur in isolation. Our Family Advocates work alongside our lawyers to provide holistic support and help clients navigate both legal and social support systems.

We work with individuals, families and communities to promote healthy relationships free from violence and to strengthen safety, wellbeing and resilience.

Our Family Advocacy and Social Support services include:

  • Providing culturally safe assistance
  • Intensive case management over sustained periods
  • Advocacy, practical support and information
  • Crisis support, including food vouchers, dignity packages and other emergency assistance
  • Coordinating support with government and community agencies
  • Risk assessments and safety planning
  • Court support and accompaniment
  • Attending meetings with other agencies and service providers
  • Referrals to culturally appropriate and safe support services

Our team draws on specialist knowledge of trauma and complex post-traumatic stress to support clients with care, understanding and respect.

Community Education and Prevention Programs

Prevention and education are essential to building safer families and communities. Our Community Engagement Team works alongside lawyers and Family Advocates to deliver legal education, awareness and prevention programs throughout Western Australia.
