The Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) is expanding its regulatory and compliance functions and is seeking talented lawyers to join its Court and Tribunal Team. This is a rare opportunity to practise in a dynamic and evolving area of government law. DTMI's responsibilities now extend beyond traditional transport matters and include complex compliance, enforcement and regulatory functions across the Maritime, Towing, On-Demand Transport and Road Law sectors. As a member of the Court and Tribunal Team, you will be at the forefront of government enforcement activity, appearing in courts and tribunals, conducting prosecutions, managing appeals, advising investigators and decision-makers, and helping shape the interpretation and application of new and emerging legislation. The legal issues are diverse, challenging and intellectually engaging. You will work with legislation that is evolving in response to changing industries, technologies and community expectations. This creates unique opportunities to develop expertise in regulatory litigation while contributing to the development of important public policy outcomes. Immediate Opportunities We currently have two 12-month fixed-term opportunities available for immediate filling, with the possibility of extension and/or permanency. The positions may be filled at the Solicitor Career Level (SCL) 3, SCL 4 or SCL 5 level, depending on the qualifications, experience and demonstrated capabilities of the successful applicants. This recruitment process is intended to establish a pool of suitable candidates to fill the above vacancies, as well as other similar fixed-term and permanent positions that are expected to arise within the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure over the next 12 months from the date of first appointment. There is a strong expectation of ongoing opportunities becoming available, and applicants placed in the pool will be actively considered for future vacancies across the different specialities as they arise. The Department of Transport assists the Minister of Transport administer over thirty Acts of Parliament relating to amongst other matters: driver licensing, vehicle registration, personal on demand transport, marine safety, coastal infrastructure and integrated transport planning. Legal and Legislative Services (LLS) provides a comprehensive legal service; including providing legal advice, representation in courts and tribunals, litigation management and support and drafting of legal documents. LLS also manages the significant legislative drafting program for DTMI.
