Opportunity for Chinese speaking PLTs/Graduate Solicitors/Solicitors

Job Description

About STC Lawyers

STC Lawyers is a Sydney-based law firm specialising in Australian immigration and migration law. We assist individuals, families and businesses across a broad range of migration matters, including skilled migration, employer-sponsored visas, student visas, citizenship, Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) matters and complex migration cases.

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented PLT student with strong English and Mandarin communication skills to join our growing team.

The Opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity for a law graduate or student undertaking Practical Legal Training (PLT) who is interested in developing a career in migration law.

You will work closely with our lawyers and migration professionals and gain genuine hands-on experience across real client matters, including visa applications, legal research, drafting, submissions and client communications.

As a significant proportion of our clients are Mandarin-speaking, the successful candidate must be confident communicating professionally in both English and Mandarin Chinese.

We are looking for someone who may grow with the firm beyond their PLT placement. Candidates who perform strongly during their PLT placement may be offered a full-time position with STC Lawyers upon successful completion of their PLT.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the preparation and lodgement of visa, sponsorship and nomination applications;
  • Conducting legal and migration-related research;
  • Drafting correspondence, submissions and other legal documents;
  • Reviewing and organising supporting evidence and client documentation;
  • Assisting lawyers with case preparation and file management;
  • Communicating with clients in both English and Mandarin regarding documents and case progress;
  • Assisting with correspondence with the Department of Home Affairs and other relevant authorities; and
  • Providing general legal and administrative support to the team.

About You

The successful candidate will:

  • Be currently undertaking or about to commence Practical Legal Training (PLT);
  • Have completed, or be nearing completion of, an Australian law degree;
  • Have strong written and verbal English communication skills;
  • Be fluent in Mandarin Chinese, with the ability to communicate confidently with Mandarin-speaking clients;
  • Have excellent attention to detail and organisational skills;
  • Be able to manage multiple tasks and work effectively to deadlines;
  • Have a professional, responsible and proactive attitude;
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic and commitment to client service; and
  • Have a genuine interest in developing a career in legal practice.

Highly Regarded

  • A genuine interest in Migration Law and Administrative Law;
  • Previous experience in a law firm, migration practice or professional office environment; and
  • Chinese reading and writing skills.

What We Offer

  • Genuine hands-on experience working on real migration matters;
  • Exposure to a broad range of Australian immigration and migration law matters;
  • Practical experience in legal drafting, research, case preparation and client communication;
  • Direct mentoring and guidance from experienced lawyers and migration professionals;
  • A supportive and collaborative team environment; and
  • A potential pathway to full-time employment with STC Lawyers for high-performing PLT candidates.

How to Apply

Please submit:

  • Resume / CV;
  • Academic Transcript; and
  • A brief Cover Letter outlining your interest in migration law, your English and Mandarin language abilities, and your availability for PLT placement.
