Industrial Relations Consultant (Casual)

Job Description

About us

Unfair Dismissal Experts Pty Ltd (UDE) is a specialist industrial relations firm that operates exclusively in the Fair Work Commission’s jurisdiction. We support employees around Australia who have experienced unfair dismissal or adverse action in their workplace. We do this by preparing applications on their behalf, attending conciliations to negotiate outcomes with their former employers, and representing them at hearings.

We have a team of experienced lawyers and industrial relations consultants who help hundreds of clients each year navigate the complex Fair Work Commission framework. We embrace flexibility, automation, and technology and, as such, all of our staff work remotely. Through our technology arm, we have developed in-house AI tools which you will be able to leverage to help ensure we deliver the best possible outcomes for our clients.

As well as offering exposure to real-life clients and advocacy work, UDE is part of Monash University’s Clinical Legal Education Program. We provide mentoring to support UDE alumni from all universities. Many UDE alumni have gone on to roles at top-tier firms, government departments, and judges’ associateships. We pride ourselves on being a springboard for talented alumni.

What you’ll do

As an Industrial Relations Consultant, you will:

  • Represent clients in unfair dismissal and general protections matters at the Fair Work Commission. You will appear before Conciliators, Commissioners, Deputy Presidents, and Vice Presidents of the Commission to advocate for your clients. This will be conducted remotely via Microsoft Teams; however, the occasional in-person attendance at the Commission offices nearest to you may be required.
  • Negotiate with the other side’s representatives, which may include senior associates and partners from mid- and top-tier firms.
  • Draft and execute settlement deeds and agreements.

This is a unique role offering a high degree of autonomy and responsibility.

Following a training program, you will be allocated conciliations or hearings based on the periods of availability you enter into our system, and there is significant flexibility in when you choose to liaise with your client and prepare for your appearance. You will be supported by a collegiate team of Industrial Relations Consultants and seasoned lawyers who will review and sign off on your work as required.
