Associate to the Hon Justice Cobby

Please note: The Hon Justice Cobby is seeking applications for two associate positions. Each position is for a period of up to 12 months but may be extended by a further 12 months by agreement.

Salary: Level 2.4 under the Public Sector CSA Agreement 2024


Applications are invited for a number of positions as personal staff to Judicial Officers at the Supreme Court of Western Australia.


The length of tenure is indicated in the application guidelines for each chambers. Each position commences in January 2027 (unless otherwise indicated).


Successful applicants must be available to commence on Monday 4 January 2027.


Prospective applicants should possess the following attributes:
- A law degree, or nearly completed law degree;
- A high level of academic achievement (Honours or equivalent is desirable, but not essential);
- High-level research and analytical skills;
- Excellent verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills; and
- Editorial skills are an advantage.


The successful applicant will be required to undertake legal research and produce written work for a Judge. There are also requirements to carry out administrative functions in preparation for Court sittings and to attend in Court and act as a Judicial Support Officer.


Service in this position may fulfil the work experience component of Practical Legal Training courses approved by the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia. Applicants should make their own enquiries in this regard. Applicants who have already been admitted to practice as a lawyer and would welcome the experience of working as an Associate are also encouraged to apply.

When considering whether this role is right for you, it is important to consider the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court. The Court deals with serious criminal offences, including homicide offences, as well as High Risk Serious Offenders. In the course of their duties, Associates will encounter materials (including but not limited to photographs, videos, written statements, and oral evidence) associated with these charges. This material may be confronting and/or distressing. The Court is committed to reducing exposure to these materials for staff wherever possible and the Department of Justice offers services and resources to support staff.
