Industrial Officer/Advocate

Job Description

The Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union is one of Australia’s largest trade unions and covers workers in many areas of manufacturing including metal and engineering, scientific and technical, printing and vehicle.

The AMWU has a position available for an Industrial Officer/Advocate based in our Port Adelaide Office. The position may involve some regional and interstate travel. The position involves working with members, potential members, union delegates and other Officials and Officers of  AMWU and other Unions and employers.

Duties will include:

  • Preparing cases and representing the AMWU before Fair Work Australia (FWA) and the South Australia Employment Tribunal (SAET)
  • Negotiating with employers and employer organisations about Commission cases
  • Representing members in the Magistrates Court, in restricted circumstances.
  • Providing advice and information to State Officials, Organisations, Delegates and members as required.
  • Researching, monitoring and reporting industrial law developments
  • Researching and reporting on issues affecting workers covered by the Union.
  • Preparing submissions for internal and external inquiries.
  • Maintaining Industry Standards
  • Assistance to the Organising and Growth teams through analytical research and industry mapping.
  • Preparing Commission paperwork for enterprise bargaining including protected industrial action ballot applications and notices of industrial action.

Selection criteria

  • Highly developed research and advocacy abilities are required
  • Legal qualification desirable but not compulsory
  • A demonstrated passion for trade unionism
  • A commitment to workers in the manufacturing sector
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Intermediate knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to prioritise workflow

Hours:

  • 38 hours per week
  • Monthly RDO
