Junior Lawyer to Senior Associate – Immigration Law

Wan & Co Lawyers, a dynamic boutique firm in Sydney's CBD, is seeking a motivated Lawyer to Associate with 1–5 years' post-admission experience in immigration law. You will join a friendly, collaborative and fully paperless practice and work under the direct mentorship of our Principal, an Accredited Specialist in Immigration Law.

Location: Sydney, NSW

Duties and Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing legal guidance, drafting and preparing relevant legal documentation, and negotiating on clients' behalf across all matters pertaining to immigration and migration law.

  • Meeting with clients to assess their immigration situation and visa requirements, then advising on and pursuing the most appropriate legal course of action or migration pathway

  • Building cases for the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART), Federal Circuit and Family Court, or other relevant authorities by gathering evidence, conducting legal research, coordinating witnesses, and issuing formal notices of court or tribunal proceedings

  • Appearing on behalf of clients before courts, tribunals, and the Department of Home Affairs in contested immigration and migration matters

  • Overseeing visa and migration matters by drafting visa applications, legal submissions, and other relevant instruments concerning the relocation of skilled workers or family members to Australia

  • Examining and critically assessing relevant legislations and supporting materials s in connection with visa applications and migration-related matters

  • Compiling and lodging visa applications across a range of categories — including partner, skilled, employer-sponsored, protection visas, and citizenship applications — on clients' behalf

  • Advising clients on migration legislation, immigration policy, character and health obligations, sponsor duties, employer compliance requirements, and related areas of immigration law

  • Where required, serving as an authorised recipient or migration agent of record in all correspondence and dealings with the Department of Home Affairs on behalf of clients

  • Where applicable, acting for clients in merits review and judicial review proceedings to challenge visa decisions before the ART, Federal Court, or High Court

What We Are Looking For

  • Admitted as a lawyer in Australia with at least 1 year PAE in immigration law

  • Holds at least a relevant Bachelor law degree (or higher)

  • Admitted to NSW Supreme Court and has a current practising certificate

  • Fluency in both English and Chinese preferred

Skills Required:

  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and within a team

  • Exceptional attention to detail and excellent client-facing communication skills

  • Tech-fluent and comfortable in a paperless, digital workflow

  • An existing client base will be highly regarded but is not essential
