Associate to the Honourable Justice Walker, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court of Victoria

• Full-time, ongoing role
• $81,496 + 12% superannuation (VPS Grade 3.1 position)
• Role based in the Melbourne CBD

The Supreme Court of Victoria (the ‘Court’) is the highest court in Victoria and comprises the Court of Appeal and the Trial Division. The Court deals with major criminal and civil matters, plus appeals against decisions of lower courts.

Judges in the Court are supported by associates who assist in the management and coordination of the Judge’s judicial, ceremonial, court management, administrative and legal research responsibilities.

About the role

Justice Walker is seeking a legally qualified individual to be her associate commencing in mid 2027. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in civil and criminal appellate work in the Court of Appeal division of the Supreme Court of Victoria, and to closely observe the work of advocates and the judiciary.

The duties of an associate are detailed in the attached position description but specifically include:

  • assisting in the management and coordination of the Judge’s judicial and administrative responsibilities;
  • preparing research memoranda, case summaries and assisting in the production of judgments, including proofreading and editing;
  • clerking in Court, using courtroom technology to ensure proceedings are transcribed and technological aids are readily available to counsel;
  • providing administrative assistance to the Judge during hearings and in chambers;
  • assisting in managing the Judge’s chambers; and
  • accompanying the Judge to circuit courts in regional Victoria, as and when required.

The role requires a high degree of sensitivity and professionalism as you will be working closely with judicial officers, court staff, legal practitioners and members of the public.

About you

The successful applicant must be admitted to legal practice; 12 to 18 months post‑admission experience is desirable but not essential. Excellent research, writing and typing skills, proficiency in grammar and a strong academic record are essential. One or more of: experience on the editorial committee of a university law journal; mooting; research work for an academic; and/or a higher degree in law, are preferred but not essential.

To be successful in the role of associate to the Judge you will possess the following:

  • demonstrated ability in legal research and writing;
  • demonstrated ability in statutory interpretation;
  • interpersonal and communication skills to confidently and accurately convey information over the telephone, in writing and in person to members of the legal profession, the public and the media;
  • organisational and problem-solving skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment;
  • excellent computer literacy and administrative experience;
  • well-developed proofreading skills with proficiency in grammar; and
  • an excellent academic record.
