About the Role

Judicial Registrar Freeman is seeking a legally qualified individual to be his associate. 

This is a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the Criminal Division of the Supreme Court of Victoria and to work closely with a Judicial Registrar undertaking an increasingly complex and active judicial function.

The associate will play a key role in supporting the Judicial Registrar's work across a wide range of case management and judicial decision-making responsibilities, including matters involving serious criminal offences, procedural rulings, and pre-trial applications.

 Key Responsibilities

  • Providing high-level, high-volume administrative, operational and legal support to the Judicial Registrar;
  • Assisting in court during directions hearings, pre-trial witness examinations, and procedural/interlocutory applications;
  • Liaising with Judges, legal practitioners, court staff, and members of the public;
  • Managing daily chambers operations, including email, calendar and telephone communications;
  • Coordinating meetings, preparing agendas and minutes, and contribute to improvements with court process and practice;
  • Conducting legal research, drafting case summaries and preparing materials for use in court;
  • Maintaining and managing confidential court and chambers records;
  • Contributing to the efficient running of the Criminal Division's listing and case management functions; and
  • Providing support with the preparation of rulings, correspondence and written reasons, as required.

About You

You will have a demonstrated interest in criminal law and the administration of justice. You will bring excellent legal research and writing skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing demands in a high-pressure and paced environment. You will also have strong interpersonal and communication skills appropriate to working in a judicial setting. A strong academic record is essential, and post-graduate legal experience is desirable but not required. Proficiency in grammar, computer literacy, professionalism, discretion and sound judgment are critical to success in this role.
