PLT / Graduate Law Clerk – Tax Disputes, Commercial Litigation & Insolvency

Gu Legal is a boutique Sydney law practice specialising in tax controversy and litigation, commercial disputes, insolvency and related advisory work.

We are seeking a PLT student or recent law graduate who is interested in developing practical experience in complex disputes and advisory matters. The role would suit someone who enjoys working with both legal issues and numbers, and who is interested in understanding the commercial and factual background behind a dispute rather than simply conducting legal research.

The successful candidate will work directly with the Principal Solicitor and will receive exposure to a broad range of matters, including:

- ATO audits, reviews, objections and Part IVC proceedings;

- superannuation guarantee, GST, income tax, penalties and director liability matters;

- Revenue NSW and other State taxation matters;

- Administrative Review Tribunal and Federal Court proceedings;

- commercial and contractual disputes;

- insolvency, debt recovery and enforcement matters;

- preparation of evidence, chronologies and document schedules;

- legal research and preparation of case summaries;

- drafting correspondence, submissions, objections, advices and court documents;

- reviewing financial records, bank statements, accounting material and transaction records;

- preparing briefs to counsel and hearing materials; and

- assisting with general matter management and client communications.

About you

We are particularly interested in candidates who are:

- undertaking or eligible to undertake Practical Legal Training;

- organised and able to manage competing tasks and deadlines;

- careful and methodical when reviewing documents and evidence;

- comfortable working with figures, spreadsheets and financial records;

- able to write clearly and concisely;

- willing to take ownership of tasks and follow matters through to completion;

- commercially minded and interested in understanding how businesses operate;

- curious, practical and willing to ask sensible questions;

- comfortable working in a small practice where responsibility may be given relatively early; and

- interested in tax, litigation, insolvency or commercial law.

Prior experience in tax law is not required. Experience or study in accounting, finance, commerce or taxation would be well regarded, as would previous work in a law firm, accounting practice, insolvency practice or other professional services environment.

Mandarin language skills would be advantageous but are not essential.

What we offer

This is an opportunity to gain direct exposure to substantive legal work in a specialist practice. You will work closely with the Principal Solicitor rather than being confined to administrative tasks.

The role is intended to provide meaningful practical experience, including legal drafting, evidence analysis, client matters, dispute strategy and exposure to active tax and commercial proceedings.

For the right candidate, there may be an opportunity for the role to develop into a graduate solicitor or junior solicitor position following completion of PLT and admission.
