Gu Legal is a boutique Sydney law practice specialising in tax controversy and litigation, commercial disputes, insolvency and related advisory work.

We are seeking a Junior Tax Lawyer to join our growing practice. The role would suit a graduate or junior solicitor with approximately 1–3 years' post-admission experience who has a genuine interest in taxation, disputes and commercial problem-solving.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Principal Solicitor on a broad range of Federal and State taxation matters, including ATO audits and reviews, objections, administrative review proceedings, tax litigation and related commercial disputes.

The role

Your responsibilities will include:

  • assisting with ATO audits, reviews, objections and other tax controversy matters;
  • assisting with Part IVC proceedings before the Administrative Review Tribunal and Federal Court;
  • working on income tax, GST, superannuation guarantee, penalties, director liability and debt recovery matters;
  • assisting with Revenue NSW matters, including land tax, duties and other State taxation issues;
  • reviewing ATO and Revenue NSW correspondence, position papers, assessments and objection decisions;
  • conducting legal research and preparing advice on taxation and administrative law issues;
  • drafting objections, submissions, correspondence, advices and court or tribunal documents;
  • preparing chronologies, evidence schedules and factual summaries;
  • reviewing financial records, bank statements, accounting records, tax returns, BASs and transaction documents;
  • identifying evidentiary gaps and assisting with obtaining supporting material from clients and third parties;
  • preparing briefs to counsel and assisting with hearing preparation;
  • communicating with clients, accountants, counsel, government agencies and other professional advisers;
  • assisting with commercial disputes, insolvency and enforcement matters where required; and
  • supporting the ongoing development of precedents, knowledge resources and internal practice systems.

About you

We are looking for someone who:

  • is admitted, or shortly to be admitted, as an Australian legal practitioner;
  • has approximately 1–3 years' post-admission experience;
  • has a genuine interest in taxation, tax disputes, litigation or administrative law;
  • is comfortable working with numbers, spreadsheets and financial information;
  • has strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • can identify the key issues within large volumes of factual and documentary material;
  • writes clearly, accurately and concisely;
  • has strong attention to detail and takes a careful approach to evidence;
  • is organised and capable of managing competing deadlines;
  • takes ownership of tasks and follows matters through to completion;
  • is commercially minded and interested in understanding how businesses, transactions and accounting records operate; and
  • is willing to work in a small specialist practice where junior lawyers receive direct exposure to substantive matters.

Prior experience in taxation is desirable but not essential.

Candidates with experience or study in taxation, accounting, finance, commerce, insolvency or commercial litigation will be well regarded.

Mandarin language skills would be advantageous but are not essential.

You will receive exposure to substantive legal work from an early stage, including legal drafting, evidence analysis, client conferences, ATO and Revenue NSW matters, tribunal proceedings and litigation.
