The College of Law invites expressions of interest from legal practitioners who wish to be engaged as subject matter experts to provide the services of assessment development in the College’s Postgraduate Programs. Engagement in these roles is conducted on an as needed and when required basis.

As the work is predominately online, we encourage candidates from regional Australia to apply. This is an opportunity to work flexibly as part of a dynamic and highly engaged team. In addition to contributing to the development of high-quality assessment materials, this engagement provides an opportunity to become familiar with the College’s postgraduate programs and may lead to consideration for future adjunct teaching opportunities.

 Subject matter experts assist with the review, redesign and drafting of assessment materials in the College’s postgraduate programs. Subject matter experts will collaborate with the Teaching, Learning and Design team and subject lecturers to develop high-quality assessment tasks that align with learning outcomes, contemporary legal practice and academic requirements. This work will be undertaken on a project basis with flexible engagement arrangements.

Responsibilities may include:

• Reviewing existing assessment and marking materials;
• Drafting or revising assessment and marking materials;
• Ensuring assessments align with current legal practice and subject learning outcomes;
• Contributing to the design of authentic and secure assessment approaches;
• Participating in consultation meetings with the College teams including subject lecturers;
• Incorporating feedback into final assessment and marking materials; and
• Trailing and evaluating new assessment approaches, including AI-assisted tools and advising on their effectiveness and suitability.

We are currently looking to engage subject matter experts across most practice areas familiar with New South Wales, Queensland, Victorian or Western Australian jurisdictions. Please note that the Postgraduate Programs are managed through our Sydney HQ office by the Postgraduate Programs Department.

 Required qualifications and experience

Applicants must meet the following essential criteria for engagement:

• A tertiary qualification or equivalent in Law and admission as a Lawyer in one of the Australian jurisdictions.
•  At least 10 years’ experience as an Australian Legal Practitioner in a specific practice area. Accredited specialists in the relevant practice areas are encouraged to apply.
• A keen interest in teaching.
•  An enthusiasm for the practice of Law and an ability to communicate that enthusiasm.
• Skills in the use of technology.
• Capacity or willingness to contribute to the creation and maintenance of course materials (multi-media and online).
• A reliable computer and internet connection are a prerequisite.

Independent contractors must have an Australian Business Number (ABN).
