This placement is suitable for a Practical Legal Training student seeking supervised exposure to commercial litigation, dispute resolution and cross border legal practice.
You will join a partner’s core team, led by an experienced practitioner in commercial litigation and dispute resolution. Under the supervision of senior solicitors, you will assist with active matters and develop practical legal skills relevant to legal practice.
Depending on the needs of the matters and your level of experience, your work may include:
legal research and preparing research memoranda;
drafting correspondence, chronologies, court documents and other legal materials;
assisting with evidence preparation, document review and file management;
preparing briefs and materials for counsel, conferences, mediations and court appearances;
observing client communications and developing professional legal communication skills; and
supporting the team with practical aspects of matter management and legal practice.
The placement is designed to provide structured supervision, constructive feedback and exposure to the professional standards expected in practice.
Applicants must:
be enrolled in, or eligible to undertake, Practical Legal Training with the College of Law or another recognised PLT provider;
be self disciplined, organised and able to manage competing tasks responsibly;
demonstrate sound written English, attention to detail and professional judgement;
be willing to learn, take initiative and respond constructively to feedback;
work effectively as part of a team;
conduct themselves professionally and maintain strict confidentiality at all times; and
Chinese language capability and an interest in cross border commercial matters will be viewed favourably, but are not essential.
A minimum commitment of two days per week is required.
Tasks will generally be allocated during standard office hours, being 9.00 am to 6.00 pm, Monday to Friday. The nature and volume of work will depend on active matters, the student’s capacity and the availability of supervision.
This is an unpaid PLT placement undertaken for training purposes and to support the completion of recognised Practical Legal Training requirements. It is not employment and does not create an employment relationship or an entitlement to wages, benefits or future employment.
Any reimbursement or allowance, if offered, will be considered separately at the firm’s discretion and does not alter the training nature of the placement.
